“Sexual health is a state of well-being in relation to sexuality across the life span that involves physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions. Sexual health is an intrinsic element of human health and is based on a positive, equitable, and respectful approach to sexuality, relationships, and reproduction, that is free of coercion, fear, discrimination, stigma, shame, and violence.”
-Department of Health and Human Services (US), CDC/HRSA Advisory Committee on HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and STD Prevention and Treatment. Atlanta: [cited 2012 Nov 13]. Draft record of the proceedings; 2012 May 8-9
The Sexual Response Cycle...
is a pattern of events that occur during sexual arousal and intercourse. In both men and women, this cycle occurs in a sequence of four stages: Excitement, Plateau, Orgasm & Resolution.
The basic pattern of these stages is similar in both sexes, regardless of the specific sexual stimulus.
Sexual Dysfunction
Sexual dysfunction is any problem(s) that prevents you from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity. These can happen during any phase of the sexual response cycle. Unfortunately, sexual dysfunctions are highly prevalent, affecting about 43% of women and 31% of men.
Sexual dysfunction may be due to:
- Underlying disease (diabetes, cardiovascular, thyroid, etc.)
- Hormone Imbalance (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone)
- Prescription Medications
- Trauma (physical, sexual, emotional)
- Surgery (damage to blood flow, nerves and or tissues)
- Stress
- Depression
- Drug Abuse
- Alcohol consumption
- Tobacco use
- Relationship factors
Integrative Approach to the Evaluation and Management Of Sexual Dysfunction
At Replenish Center we understand that everyone has different preferences—including who they like, what they enjoy sexually, and what they choose to do with their body. We begin with the premise of embracing everyone as an individual and respecting each person’s preferences.
At your consultation, we will assess the major reasons you are not able to fully enjoy an active sex life. You should have had a normal gynecologic or urologic exam within the past year.
Your medical and sexual history, current symptoms, and detailed laboratory analysis will be reviewed to determine possible contributors.
We will provide you with an individualized plan to address and reverse the areas of concern. This may involve Hormone Restoration, addressing contributing lifestyle choices such as nutrition, exercise, proper sleep, smoking, etc., and optimizing the management of contributing medical issues. You may need further medical evaluation and/or other interventions depending on findings at your consultation.
